Some of the events we hold:
Monthly Dances
We hold a dance each month on, usually on the 3rd Saturday of the month. Sometimes these are special dances, such as the Halloween dance, the St. Andrew's Ball, the Burns Supper, or a beginner dance (see below). All dances are briefed before dancing and beginner level dances are usually walked. These dances usually have recorded music.
Beginner Dances
Two beginner dances are held each year. These are not dances just for beginners, but they are dances a beginning dancer will feel comfortable attending. All dances on the program are at the beginner level, and all are walked before they are danced. All levels of dancers enjoy these dances.
Hogmanay
Hogmanay is a Scottish celebration of the New Year. We celebrate it with a dance on New Year's Eve to ring in the new year. There is usually trifle to sample as well as champagne (or sparkling cider) to toast in the new year. A jigsaw puzzle often awaits those who want to sit out a dance.
Halloween Dance
We always have fun with the Halloween Dance (the October monthly dance). Costumes are requested to be based on dance names and prizes are given in several categories, for both individuals and groups.
Burns Supper
Each year we celebrate the birthday of Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet, with a supper and ball in his honor. Special features include a history of Burns, toasts to the Lads and Lassies, and the presentation of the haggis. This event is held jointly with the Orange County Branch. We have live music for this event.
St. Andrew's Ball
St. Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland. Each year we celebrate him with a ball on the Saturday nearest St. Andrew's Day (Nov. 30). We have live music for this event.
Tea Dance
Some years we hold an afternoon Tea Dance. These are usually held on a Sunday afternoon, replacing the Saturday monthly dance, and they are a bit more casual.
Interbranch Dance
Once a year in late September, the four Southern California branches (Los Angeles, Orange County, San Gabriel Valley, and San Diego) get together for a special dance. These are usually held in Orange County (as a more central location) and have live music for the dance.
Costa Mesa Games Dance
Each year, the Costa Mesa Scottish Fest (Highland Games) is held on Memorial Day weekend. We join the other local branches and have an evening dance after the games close on Saturday. There is also the possibility to take part in dance demonstrations and audience participation dancing at the games themselves.
And a sampling of other events we have held in the past:
Dance at the Queen Mary
It the past, we have held dance demonstrations and audience participation dancing at the Queen Mary ScotsFestival.
Harwood Lodge Weekend
Harwood Lodge is a Sierra Club lodge on Mt. Baldy. We have held many weekends there, where we could relax, get away, and do some dancing.
Ojai Weekend
We have had two wonderful weekend workshops in Ojai.
Workshop and Ball
Every few years, the Southern California branches get together and hold a weekend workshop, with teachers and musicians from out of the area. This has often been held on Catalina Island.
